Albania is one of the best-value destinations in Europe, and a cheap rental car is the smartest way to see it. Public transport is limited once you leave the cities, so a car of your own turns a long bus day into a short, scenic drive. Booking locally in Albania, rather than through a big international portal, is where the real savings are: local owners can be up to 50% cheaper, with no hidden fees and no credit-card deposit held on your account.
The big global brands add desk fees, airport surcharges and large blocked deposits. Renting straight from a local owner cuts out those layers. You pay a fair daily price, agree the details directly, and there is no card pre-authorisation freezing hundreds of euros for weeks. On top of that, fuel in Albania is noticeably cheaper than in most of Western Europe, so the whole trip costs less than people expect.
Tirana International Airport Nene Tereza (TIA) sits about 17 km from the city centre, around 20 to 25 minutes by car. With Rent From Locals there are no rental desks and no queues: the owner waits for you at the terminal exit with the car ready to go. The service runs 24 hours a day, so late-night arrivals and delayed flights are not a problem. Just share your landing time in advance.
The process is simple. You need a valid driving licence, accepted directly in Albania for EU, UK and most other nationalities, plus an ID card or passport. An International Driving Permit is not required for EU citizens. There is no credit card needed: you can pay in cash or by debit card. The minimum age is generally 21, though some owners ask for 23 to 25 for larger vehicles.

Traffic in central Tirana can be busy at rush hour, so plan city moves for early morning. Outside the capital the motorways toward Durres and Vlore are modern and well kept. Smaller mountain roads can be narrow, so for off-the-beaten-track trips a compact SUV or a car with good ground clearance is worth it. Speed limits are 40 km/h in town and 110 km/h on motorways. If you plan to cross into Montenegro or Kosovo, check with the owner in advance that the car is allowed to leave the country.
July and August are peak months: Tirana fills with visitors and the cheapest cars go first, with prices that can double against the low season. Booking two to three weeks ahead in summer is always wise. Spring and autumn bring pleasant weather, lighter traffic and lower rates, the ideal time for a relaxed and affordable trip around Albania.
